NO #OLIVIAPOPE needed! Memphis Daycare Center Director Handles Reporter

Every now and then news reporters try and manipulate the interviewees on camera with their investigative questioning and slick interviewing techniques. Well, this time, a Memphis day care center director, Terry Oliver, who was seemingly under fire by Memphis’ Fox 13 reporter Trey Paul, used her professionalism and quick wit to stand firm with the center’s decision to open the door to a drug dealer, who at the time was just a mere stranger and possible customer. We didn’t have to call Olivia Pope for this interview, Terry had it handled! Not only did she address the procedures and plans executed by the day care center, she also sent a direct challenge to city leaders in Memphis and the mayor to address how issues such as these and crime can be fixed.

If any of you ever need notes on how to remain professional and turn a negative question into a positive, take a look at Terry Oliver’s response. Absolutely phenomenal. You would almost believe someone gave her the questions ahead of the interview. It does not get any better than this in my opinion!  The Day care center and its owners should be very proud to have Terri as the director. Professionalism at its finest. #TERRIFORMAYOR

  1. He is a news reporter and not a damn lawyer. He was redundant in asking the same exact question again and again. I have children myself and as a potential customer, I would prefer a a staff member greet me at the door rather than an intercom because its more hospitable. The man still could have easily said he was interested in enrolling his child and wanted to speak with someone, therefore he would have been let in at that time anyway. The fact is, the staff did not invite him in, the director indicated numerous times that he pushed his way in. This is a case where the reporter wanted to make the victim the criminal! Poor actions on the reporter’s part and I feel he should be address by management because his job is to simply report the news and inform and not ridicule victims.

  2. She handled it professionally but uhh no,i work at a preschool. Just because yes its a business its a daycare you don’t automatically let some1 in just because its potential business. This aint a store its a damn daycare. The kids safety comes 1st at all times even over business & potentially upsetting a possible customer, duh. Yea she kept them safe because this guy just happened to not have harmed them or the kids it aint like she did something magical. I could understand if it was a parent that opened the door for him not knowing or something. the whole we have 82 kids so we don’t know all the parents isn’t good enough. Find a way for you & the staff to know the parents/ppl who pick up. Again this aint about business which is what she kept saying it was, no in the end its about the kids safety at all times.

  3. I hope this blog can come to the attention of Trey Paul and he might have enough honesty and self-awareness to admit that he was complete ass in this interview. Watch, take notes and learn to better Paul.

  4. Why is the reporter asking the same question almost to the effect of blaming the daycare center for the incident. What about the police could they not wait or did the result come from incompetence or are they trying to connect black criminals to black business …why is the reporter playing spin politics what is his bias or does he genuinely feel there is a bigger underlying story here I don’t see the angle. I see room for additional training Or a different job that is more specific to his skill set

  5. instead of congratulating the director and her organization for keeping everyone safe, this dude tried to make it seem like her business practice of addressing what could have been a potential customer was out of line and a danger to everyone inside. The reporter wasn’t ready for a clear and courteous response. He should have stopped with the questions 30 seconds in. The director made everything clear.

  6. She did an excellent job at responding to the reporter. There was one comment that stated the person should have been screened? I’m Kay curious on how would you screen Ppl coming in without showing prejudice standards. It’s not just the color of the skin, but if they look a certain way? As she stated, they followed they’re protocol and no one was harmed. It’s easy for people to sit in the seat of judgment and offer suggestions until they’re in the same seat and would’ve done no better.

  7. Reporter did his job, daycare administrator did her “job”…but I would love to hear from any parent who had a child there and see if they are OK with how the safety procedures worked. She has the gift of gab but I think they let the children down if in fact the policy allows for door to opened without proper ID – and for her to compare this situation with Sandy Hook is quite disrespectful to that community.

  8. OMG he is an ASSHOLE! I’m sorry for the expletive but it’s needed in this case. Trying to make a story where there isn’t. Only makes him look absolutely stupid.

  9. Faux news is horrible but….. She should’ve screened him either way, client or not using the intercom. The Fox news reporter had no right to corner her on camera but her argument is invalid. No one was hurt so they did a good job is moot. Children could have been hurt and were most definitely put in harms way.

  10. Terry Oliver did an excellent job of answering the SAME question over and over again. She didn’t lose her cool and was very professional with a supposed news reporter who tried his best to trip her up but ended up looking like he didn’t understand English!

  11. Who hired this idiot of a report. Such an annoying interview, he asked her the same question like a million time literally(LOL).

  12. The reported of a jerk. He was trying to make it look like the daycare did something wrong. Good for her, kept her cool and gave all the credit to the staff. I would have slapped him. Annoying.

  13. She did an excellent job. I am. At a loss in trying to understand the reasoning of the reporter in trying to transfer some blame on the day care. you saw the repeated look of frustration on his face, the rolling of his eyes( how professional of him) i would never give the news a live interview. It makes me feel like they cant be trusted.

  14. Wow…I’m amazed at the redundancy of his questioning; his apparent discontent via his facial expressions, and blatant lack of professionalism. I’m terribly pleased that her stance was resolute. Yes, it was quite Pope-ish in nature, and I’m sure Olivia, Kerry, and Shonda would be proud – as I am! Despite the pervasive negativity in the background, I’m glad to see that a woman of color could still be perceived as articulate, unwavering, and successful – in her 20+ years of untainted business. I personally think he should have been reprimanded for poor journalistic behavior and what appeared to be ill-based questioning practices. Nice job, Ro.

  16. As a reporter it was his job to interview her not interrogate her. He obviously disagreed with how it was handled, however, to ask the same question over and over made him look inept at his job and unprofessional, because it was obvious that he was annoyed because she gave him the SAME answer every time he asked the SAME question. A better reporter would have just reported and let the people and parents decide if they agreed with her policy and procedure.

  17. So… if a desperate criminal eluding the police runs into a school. Its the schools fault for not having good enough security. If he runs into a daycare the daycare has to have a better security plan. If he runs into a restaurant, then they should have screened him first. Even if he looks just like everybody else. So if he ran into your home then is it your fault for not having bars on your windows. At what point is it a crime problem. At what point do we point the finger at a pitiful criminal who would attempt to involve innocent children in police activity. Why must we transform our communities into fortresses.
